Cabot's Ten Tors Team has just benefited from an innovative new initiative from Recycle Outdoor Gear (ROG). The Gift Your Gear initiative was run in partnership with the prestigious outdoor clothing brand Rohan whose customers were encouraged to return their used unwanted outdoor clothing to a Rohan shop.

The outdoor gear donated is used to make a real difference to local community organisations, youth groups and charities; enabling others to benefit from life changing experiences in the great outdoors, regardless of their circumstance.
Cabot Scouts Ten Tors training team had set up its own equipment loan bank over 15 years ago in order to ensure that everyone in the District had access to equipment of the standard required to cope with the harsh conditions of Dartmoor. It can be mighty rough during the training period February to May which has taken its toll on kit. Now however thanks to Gift Your Gear we have a set of nearly new waterproof jackets to loan out to our team members as they navigate the 2 day self sufficiency challenge carrying all their kit over a minimum of 35 miles. There's a 45 mile and 55 mile route for the older age groups. We are just one of 400 teams from across the South West from, schools, cadet units, Scouts and other youth groups who take part each May in the annual event now in its 53rd year, which is organised by the army.

You can learn more about our training programme at Cabot's own Ten Tors website www.cabottentors.org.uk.

Ten Tors 2013 040

Members of this year's group at Ashton Court in their new gear, taking a well earned rest during a day's navigation training in November. Starting out with sleet, heavy rain and strong winds, the day turned dry and relatively mild only to end with showers and a cool breeze. All four seasons in less than 12 hours – just like Dartmoor!

If you have any items of discarded outdoor equipment that you would like to donate to Gift Your Gear then please follow the links on the website www.recycleoutdoorgear.com. Also watch out for money off promotions when you trade in your old gear at a participating local retailer.

The Ten Tors training team are still on the lookout for outdoor gear that is still in good condition in sizes XXS – S and they can be contacted via the website or by email: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
